The deck we are building here is a fairly normal slatted timber deck less than one metre high. This article is an overview of general steps in building a deck and is intended as a broad illust...

Arduino, PICAXE microprocessors compared

Arduino, PICAXE microprocessors compared

In creating a fully automated target, with spring-back target buttons controlled by microprocessors, I was able to compare the workings of Arduino and PICAXE. Arduino and PICAXE  are two very different devices—like comparing a revolver and a shotgun. There are smaller Arduinos and bigger PICAXE...

My shed the barn

My shed the barn

When designing a house, first build your giant shed where you can make joinery for the house-to-be. That was the thought of Julian Pirie. But he was to take a special route—he decided to model his barn-like “shed” on old-style English oak barns, typically housing Aston Martins in magazines p...

Mini-bike excitement hits schools PDF Print E-mail
Written by ROGER EMMERSON

Mini BikeThe idea of the air-cooled mini-bike as a school project for Year 12 and Year 13 students has its roots in a reaction to the introduction of NCEA Technology back in 2002. Like many other technology teachers at the time I embraced the new curriculum, believing it was the right way forward for the future. How wrong I was.
Student numbers went into freefall; pupils were walking away from the subject in large numbers. The previous year, 2001, I had pupils that achieved six A grades and five B grades in the old School Certificate. But in 2002 my morale and more importantly the morale of my students was at a low.

Two 0.8 mm deep grooves are turned into each end of the stub for the e-clips which will hold the reel in place.

Making your own campervan PDF Print E-mail
Written by BERT TOOMEY

Camper VanConverting an ordinary van to a campervan is a project I have been talking about for some time. As a retired technical teacher, I felt I had the necessary skills and when a 2005 Kia Pregio van in excellent condition became available I decided to take the plunge.
My plan was to fit the space with two beds, one each side which can be expanded to a "double" to cover the full width. Fitments include a cupboard with the sink on top and tanks for clean water and grey water below.

Dad-and-son offroader fun PDF Print E-mail
Written by GREG JOREY

Offroad FunOver the last couple of years, my son Kurt and I have built a few basic go-karts which not only gave him a taste of very basic engineering, but also allowed us to pile up valuable hours of quality time working together in the shed. This new project is one-person off-roader that would suit a 12 to 13-year-old through to an adult. It is powered by a 300 cc quad engine.
