Finishing a simple ukulele PDF Print E-mail
Written by ROBIN OVERALL

UkuleleThe soundboard is made from cedar. The soundboard and back are book-matched and
are braced with thin slivers of the same wood. The neck and tuning head are finished before the fingerboard is glued on. I have also fretted the fingerboard prior to fixing it, as I believe it to be an easier process.
Making the tools required is an enjoyable part of the ukulele-building process. I needed a hammer with the softness of a wooden head and the deadweight of brass so made one. Some people press the frets in with a simple bar mounted in the drill press. Whatever takes your fancy.
Your first instrument will not be perfect by any means so don’t get depressed about it. This is not a utilitarian piece of woodwork but rather an exercise in control of tools and mediums. The skills acquired along the way are invaluable for other branches of woodwork and will pay dividends many times over.
